Bucharest – Bran Castle

Yesterday we boarded coaches to visit Bran Castle. Firstly we crossed the Ploiesti Oil Fields, a heavily bombed target during WWII but now a continuing source of oil for Romania.

We then started the slow climb up the beautiful Prahova Valley with its densely wooded mountain flanks and winter resort towns. After we crossed the Carpathian chain and came down into the valley of Bran, we went to the famous Bran Castle, legendary home of Dracula.

For the last couple of days whilst in Bulgaria and Romania we have seen many gypsies, they live in home built very close to each other and use donkey or horse and carts as their means of transport.

Bran Castle built by the Saxons was also used as a summer residence by Romania’s Queen Marie. Many of her furnishings remain, we also climbed the secret staircase in the castle.

This was the prison in the castle, which at the end would only fit a person standing upright.

We are amazed at how beautiful the countryside is it reminds us a lot of Austria, we would love to come back and explore more.

Afterwards we had free time to explore the village before heading to the restaurant for a Romanian meal.

These are the radio wires used to jam the radio signals during communist times so that the Romanians could not receive any information from outside the country.

This is the end of our Eastern European tour. We get on a flight to Paris in a few hours. Next time we look at the Olympic opening ceremony and see France, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania we will show more interest having visited their countries.

Not sure when we will add to the blog next as the coming few days will be hectic and mostly travelling - home in just three days.

Thanks for watching!
